Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to use the Laplace Adomian decomposition method (LADM) to investigate the effects of thermal convection, thermal conduction, surface emissivity and thermal radiation on the heat dissipated by a continuously moving plate undergoing thermal processing.

Design/methodology/approach

In performing the analysis, it is assumed that the thermal conductivity and surface emissivity of the plate are both temperature-dependent. The accuracy of the LADM solutions is confirmed by comparing the results obtained for the temperature distribution within the plate with those reported in the literature based on the differential transformation method.

Findings

It is shown that the heat dissipated from the plate reduces as the Peclet number increases. By contrast, the dissipated heat increases as any one of the non-dimensionalized parameters of the system, i.e. Nc, Nr and B, increases. In addition, the temperature drop along the length of the plate reduces as parameter A increases owing to a more rapid heat transfer.

Originality/value

The results provide a useful source of reference for the choice of suitable materials and cooling fluids in a variety of practical applications.

Abstract

Joon Y. Park is one of the pioneers in developing nonlinear cointegrating regression. Since his initial work with Phillips (Park & Phillips, 2001) in the area, the past two decades have witnessed a surge of interest in modeling nonlinear nonstationarity in macroeconomic and financial time series, including parametric, nonparametric and semiparametric specifications of such models. These developments have provided a framework of econometric estimation and inference for a wide class of nonlinear, nonstationary relationships. In honor of Joon Y. Park, this chapter contributes to this area by exploring nonparametric estimation of functional-coefficient cointegrating regression models where the structural equation errors are serially dependent and the regressor is endogenous. The self-normalized local kernel and local linear estimators are shown to be asymptotic normal and to be pivotal upon an estimation of co-variances. Our new results improve those of Cai et al. (2009) and open up inference by conventional nonparametric method to a wide class of potentially nonlinear cointegrated relations.

Abstract

Purpose

Although the feasibility and effectiveness of the fused deposition modeling (FDM) method have been proposed and developed, studies of applying this technology to various materials are still needed for researching its applicability, especially with regard to polymer blends and composites. The purpose of this paper is to study the deposition-induced effect and the effect of compatibilizers on the mechanical properties of polypropylene and polycarbonate (PP/PC) composites.

Design/methodology/approach

For this purpose, three different deposition modes for PP/PC composites with or without compatibilizers were used for the FDM method and tested for tensile properties. Also, parts with the same materials were made by injection molding and used for comparison. In addition, different deposition speeds were used to investigate the different deposition-induced effects. Furthermore, the behavior of the mechanical properties was clarified with scanning electron microscope images of the fracture surfaces.

Findings

The research results suggest that the deposition orientation has a significant influence on the mechanical behavior of PP/PC composite FDM parts. The results also indicate that there is a close relationship between the mechanical properties and morphological structures which are deeply influenced by compatibilization. Compared with injection molded parts, the ductility of the FDM parts can be dramatically improved due to the formation of fibrils and micro-fibrils by the deposition induced during processing.

Originality/value

This is the first paper to investigate a PP/PC composite FDM process. The results of this paper verified the applicability of PP/PC composites to FDM technology. It is also the first time that the deposition-induced effect during FDM has been investigated and studied.
